Research Interests:

My research is focused on impeding the premature senescence and DNA damage observed in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome fibroblasts.  Currently, I am investigating:

• The role of microRNA-34a in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) during obesity. With the rapidly rising rates of obesity and OA, examining the development and severity of OA in the obese population is of utmost priority

• How the dysregulation miR-34a in the plasma, as well as, locally in the joint contributes to the development and severity of OA in obese individuals

• How a sustained high-fat diet alters the expression of miR-34a in the plasma and the joint and influences susceptibility to the development and extent of OA compared to a lean diet in mice

Our incentive to pursue this project is our vision that targeting these miRNAs in the obese population will be therapeutically beneficial in arresting the development of OA; thus offering the potential for personalized medicine for this subtype of OA.
